2019 SUMMER PROGRAM
We cannot wait to host our FIFTH annual summer camp! We're looking forward to another beautiful week of creativity, love, power, and community. Please find all our need-to-know info, as well as registration links below.
June 10 - 15, 2019. Hours are 9 am - 4 pm, except on the day of our field trip.
Location + Fees:
Camp will be held at the Hebrew Union Temple at 504 Main Street in downtown Greenville. This is the same location as last year. There is no cost associated with participating in Girls Write the World; however, campers are expected to assist with fundraising activities.
Girls Write the World is open to all female students in 8th-12th grade who are currently attending a public school in Washington County, MS. Space is limited and the application process is selective. Interested campers should apply using the registration link below. If you have questions about the application process please contact us at:
Typical Day at Camp:
A typical day at Girls Write the World is fun, inspiring, and action-packed. Camp runs from 9 AM - 4 PM every day (except on the day of our field trip). Our summer camp curriculum is a combination of poetry writing classes, health education, college counseling, and female-youth specific workshops. Campers begin each day with creative writing classes in the morning. In these classes, campers study the work of inspiring female poets, work to develop their own poems, then participate in small group revision workshops. In the afternoons, the campers cook lunch together, then participate in community responsive workshops for the remainder of the day. Our workshops are designed to address some of the unique challenges and opportunities of girlhood. Past workshop topics have included sex education, self-defense, media literacy, self-care, healthy relationships, and leadership development.
Mandatory Parent Night:
On Sunday evening, before camp begins, GWTW staff will host a mandatory parent night to review our camp program and expectations. It is expected that every camper have a parent/guardian attend. Our parent night is scheduled for Sunday, June 9th at 5 pm at the Hebrew Union Temple in Downtown Greenville.
College Tour Field Trip:
Every year, Girls Write the World takes a field trip to visit a college outside of the Delta. This year, Girls Write the World will travel to Starkville, MS to tour Mississippi State University. GWTW will cover all costs associated with this trip. Campers will leave Greenville at 8 am and return home by 6 pm.
On Saturday, following our week of programming, campers will host a community writing retreat for friends, family, classmates, and the larger Greenville community. This retreat will feature portions of the week's program and will be designed and hosted by our campers. This year's Community Day will run from 2 - 5 pm on Saturday, June 15th. All campers are encouraged to invite friends and family to this event!
On Saturday, following our week of programming, GWTW will host our annual poetry slam. Campers will perform the pieces they have developed over the week for an audience of supporters. This year's showcase will be held on Saturday, June 15th at 6 pm. Location details coming soon!
